Since its inception 50 years ago, there have always been people who have identified as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Questioning living in Leisure Village West. Whether they were open about it or chose to live privately, we have always been here.

As the years moved on, more and more self-identified LGBTQ folks became visible. We met each other in the various Clubs and Groups and at the pool. Many of us began socializing in our homes or the facilities of Leisure Village West. So, by the latter part of 2018, it became apparent that there was a large enough critical mass of individuals to start a Group. With the support of the Recreation Department, an application was made to the Community Services Committee, and the Group, LGBTQ+ & Friends, was created.

Our first meeting was held in March 2019. It afforded us the opportunity to get to know each other and learn about our past lives before moving to Leisure Village West. We were happy to welcome our straight friends who came to learn and lend their support to our new Group.

We have had group discussions about coming out, dealing with families during the holidays, and how we interact in the Leisure Village West community. We have done Karaoke, celebrated the significant holidays, hosted potlucks, and participated in the fabric of life in Leisure Village West. We have had gatherings outside the confines of the Village as well. 

We strive to make Leisure Village West a welcoming and accepting environment for the LGBTQ+ community. 

The LGBTQ+ & Friends Group meets on the 2nd Monday of the month at 7 p.m. Please join us!
